Physical Paysend Mastercard scores 4.7/10 across 48 community sources, and the first fact frames everything else: the plastic card is a legacy product. Paysend stopped issuing new plastic cards to UK/EEA users registering from 8 June 2023 onward and now only services cards already in circulation, redirecting demand to virtual issuance and to Paysend Libre, an SMS-delivered virtual Mastercard built with Mastercard Move for the US-to-Latin America remittance corridor. Praise is consistent but narrow: flat upfront transfer fees (around GBP 1 / EUR 1.50 / USD 2, with some zero-fee corridors), card-to-card settlement in minutes using only a 16-digit recipient card number across 170+ countries, payout into regional wallets such as GCash, bKash and Alipay, and a genuinely clean app - roughly 4.2 on Google Play across about 181,000 reviews, near 4.8 on iOS, and 4.1-4.2 on Trustpilot from 41,000+ reviews - that shows the fee, live rate and delivery estimate before you confirm. The economics are less generous than the marketing. Spending outside a held currency balance triggers a flat 2% FX markup, ATM withdrawals past roughly GBP 200 / EUR 220 a month add another 2%, independent reviewers put a further 0.5-1.5% spread inside the quoted rate, and the plastic card historically carried a one-off issuance fee near GBP 5 - leaving it uncompetitive against mid-market alternatives for travel or daily spending. There is no cashback, points or crypto reward of any kind, only a nominal fiat referral bonus. The recurring failure mode is compliance: as an FCA-regulated e-money institution, Paysend runs automated AML monitoring that freezes accounts and transfers without warning, and threads on Reddit, Google Play and Trustpilot document eight-day pending transfers, repeated selfie and ID demands, and month-long blocks against an internal 24-48 hour review window confirmed in Financial Ombudsman rulings. Two structural risks are poorly understood by users. Balances are safeguarded at partner banks but are not covered by FSCS, so insolvency would leave holders as unsecured creditors; and because card-to-card sends are authorised push payments, ombudsman decision DRN-5759875 confirms Paysend is not liable when a customer is socially engineered into sending funds, with job-task and marketplace scams recurring across Reddit and YouTube comments and no route to recovery. Support is the weakest dimension by a distance: email-only ticketing with no phone line, waits stretching past a week, and scripted replies arriving exactly when funds are frozen. Two points are genuinely contested across sources and worth verifying in-app for your own country - how transparent the FX spread really is, and precisely which regions and registration dates can still obtain a card.
